| 11. How do I create ringtones from (iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody) WMA, MP4, M4A, AAC files? |
|
|
When you download music from popular digital music sources like iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, Wal-Mart or others, they will be in copy protected file formats with the extension: WMA, MP4, M4A, or AAC. As these file formats are copy protected, you cannot easily copy or convert them (this is done to limit piracy). There is, however, a method to convert the music to a MP3 format. Please note that these instructions are neither designed to condone the conversion of music you don't own nor promote music piracy.

|
Conversion your music to MP3 |
 |
|
 |
| |
This method can be used to basically "rip" anything that plays on your computer's speaker, not limited to just downloaded music.
- Download and install Audacity .
- Download lame_enc.dll on to you "Desktop", which is required when you export your audio to MP3 with Audacity. If you download the compressed file, you should extract and save "lame_enc.dll" on your "Desktop"
- Run Audacity and at the top change the drop-down to "Wave Out Mix" or "Stereo Mix.

- Play the song you want to convert on your PC using an audio player(like iTune player, Window MediaPlayer etc).
- Click the red circle "Record" button in Audacity to start recording.
- The volume slider to the left of the "Wave Out Mic" drop-down needs to be adjusted so the peak sound is between -3dB and 0dB. You can view the real-time peak sound level in the upper right corner of Audacity. The peak level will be displayed as a dark red line to the right of the light and dark red boxes. Slide the microphone volume control so these red lines are between the -6 and 0 marker (-3dB is perfect). If you do not do this step, the music will sound soft or very distorted. Once you set this, you likely will not need to change it again.

- Click the yellow square "Stop" button and then click the "X" icon in the upper left of the box for the sound sample you used as a test to calibrate the volume.
You're now done setting up and calibrating the system. You shouldn't need to do the above steps anymore unless you change the volume on your computer. The following are the steps you use to convert.
- Start Audacity if it isn't already running.
- Click the red circle "Record" button in Audacity to start recording.
- Play the song you want to convert in the normal way you always do.
- When you want to ringtone to end, click the yellow square "Stop" button.
- Click on the blank area in the bottom left corner of the box for the sound sample to select it.
- On the "Effect" menu, select "Amplify...", and click "OK".
- From the "File" menu, select "Export As MP3...". If Audacity requires "lame_enc.dll", you should include "lame_enc.dll" in "Desktop"(downloaded earlier)
- Save MP3 file in "Desktop" and enter a file name you can remember and select "Save".
The file is now in MP3 format. You can now download your MP3 as a ringtone with mRingers. |
